A powerful necromancer known as the Corpse God dies during a legendary battle, only to be reborn as Polka Shinoyama, a young boy in modern-day Tokyo. In the process of trying to adapt to his new physical body, he gets targeted by various groups that deal with the supernatural. Among them is Misaki Sakimiya, a high school girl who can see spirits and is out for his blood from the very moment they meet. Attempting to make sense of this situation where unknown parties want him dead, Polka eventually meets Takumi Kuruya, a contractor skilled in surveillance and hacking, and Lisa Kuraki, a crime boss operating out of Shinjuku. Alongside these—and other unexpected—allies, Polka braves danger to reveal the truth of his reincarnation and the fate awaiting the world he now lives in.

Because of their unrelenting abuse toward each other and the planet, this time the gods vote unanimously in favor of ending the human race. But before the mandate passes, Brunhild, one of the 13 demigod Valkyries, puts forth an alternate proposal: rather than anticlimactically annihilating mankind, why not give them a fighting chance and enact Ragnarök, a one-on-one showdown between man and god? Spurred on by the audacity of the challenge, the divine council quickly accepts, fully confident that this contest will display the utter might of the gods. To stand a chance against the mighty heavens, Brunhild will need to assemble history's greatest individuals, otherwise the death knell will surely be sounded for mankind.

After the battle with the Witch Cult, Subaru travels back to Crusch's manor with Emilia, when he discovers, to his horror, that everyone has forgotten Rem. Earlier, she and Crusch were ambushed by the Sin Archbishops of Gluttony, Lye Batenkaitos, and Greed, Regulus Corneus. Although they fought fiercely, both ended up having their existences eaten by Lye. This caused Rem to fall into a coma, with noone but Subaru remembering her, and Crusch lost her memories. After learning what happened, a devastated Subaru commits suicide in hopes of going back in time to before the ambush to prevent it. However, it fails as he returns to after the ambush had already occurred. Subaru later attends a meeting with Emilia, the amnesiac Crusch, Felis and Wilhelm. After a heated discussion, they decide to continue their alliance. After the meeting, Emilia comforts Subaru as he grieves for Rem.
